Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan Yojana: Securing the Future of Unorganised Workers
New Delhi: The Pradhan Mantri Shram Yogi Maan-dhan (PM-SYM) Yojana, launched in February 2019, aims to provide old-age protection to workers in India’s unorganised sector. This voluntary and contributory pension scheme offers a monthly assured pension of Rs. 3,000 to eligible unorganised workers after they reach 60 years of age. The details of the scheme were provided by the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Sushri Shobha Karandlaje, in response to an unstarred question in the Rajya Sabha on July 24, 2025.
Key Features of the PM-SYM Scheme:
- Eligibility: Workers aged between 18 and 40 years with a monthly income of Rs. 15,000 or less are eligible. However, individuals who are members of EPFO, ESIC, or NPS (Government funded), or are income-tax assessees, are not eligible to join the scheme.
- Contributions: Beneficiaries contribute a monthly amount ranging from Rs. 55 to Rs. 200, depending on their entry age. The Central Government provides an equal matching contribution.
- Family Pension: The scheme includes a provision for family pension. If an eligible beneficiary dies, their spouse is entitled to receive 50% of the pension as family pension.
- Enrolment: Enrolment in the scheme can be done through Common Service Centres, which have a network of approximately 4 lakh centres across the country. Eligible unorganised workers can also self-enroll by visiting the portal www.maandhan.in.
The PM-SYM Yojana underscores the government’s commitment to providing social security and financial stability for the vast unorganised workforce in the country.
